[00:00:00] Morgan: Hey everyone. Welcome to the lucky pup podcast, where we’re taking big ideas and we’re weaving them together in a way that makes a big picture relatable and hopefully also a bit inspirational and educational too. You’re going to find candid and authentic conversations about the struggles we’ve encountered as we try to live more full and happy lives.
[00:00:16] I’m your host Morgan Weber, and I am so excited to be back here with you on the podcast. I had a very busy spring and summer, and I am so glad to be back behind this microphone, connecting with you. I’m probably going to talk more about my last few months on season two of the podcast, but first we need to wrap up season one.
[00:00:36] I am very glad to be bringing you Amber and Doug with the Florida Pet Services Association. Together we’re talking all about their upcoming summit and the value and importance of in person conferences. I met both Doug and Amber and really most of my pet sitter friends at conferences over the last three years.
[00:00:54] And I cannot say enough good things about the benefits of getting out there and prioritizing your growth, your business, and really tapping into this community that awaits you at these conferences. I myself am going to be speaking at their upcoming summit. And if you haven’t gotten your ticket yet to the conference, it isn’t too late.
[00:01:10] You still have time to join us in Naples, Florida. Thursday, August 22nd through Saturday, August 24th. There is a really amazing lineup of speakers and sponsors ready to meet you at this conference, and I hope to see you there. So with that, here’s my conversation with Amber and Doug.
[00:01:29] Doug and Amber, thank you guys so much for being here with me today. We’re bringing the podcast back.
[00:01:34] Upcoming Florida Pet Services Summit
[00:01:34] Morgan: It’s been in hibernation here for the summer, but I am so excited to chat with you guys about the Florida Pet Services Summit that is coming up. So Amber, you are the president of the Florida Pet Sitters Summit. Association and Doug, you are the treasurer and I’m just super excited to chat more about the summit and all of the fun that we are going to have coming up in August. So I don’t know, Doug, Amber, whoever would like to get us started, why don’t you give a little intro maybe to what the association is and then also your upcoming summit.
[00:02:02] Doug: so much for having us, Morgan. I’m so excited that the podcast is coming out of hibernation. I’m stoked for this. Tell us a little bit about what you have coming up for this season’s podcast. I’m going
[00:02:16] Morgan: You’re going to flip. Oh my gosh. We’re going to go backwards to go forwards here. So, I’ve got a couple more episodes still to wrap up from the last season. So folks have been following along for a little while. I just had, I had some big business things come up and I needed to take, some time and focus on them.
[00:02:32] So I’ve got three episodes that we were going to wrap up from the previous season. And then we’re going to go forward. We’re going to talk a ton about Burnout and all the different things that go into burnout. So whether it’s the type of work that you’re doing, whether it’s how you’re doing the work, whether it’s making time for yourself, all of that is going to be on the table. I think burnout is one of the key reasons why people leave any kind of business. and I think it impacts our quality of life so much. And. I think we all deserve more than a life of burnout, so. that’s what we’re going to chat about in season two.
[00:03:05] I’m super excited.
[00:03:07] Doug: That’s awesome. Burnout is such a huge topic that we all deal with, so thank you for covering that in these upcoming
[00:03:13] Morgan: Yes. I’m, and you guys have, I’m super excited as well because you have, a burnout session essentially at the summit this year. And I hear from a lot of people Oh, I went to a conference once and there was a burnout session I don’t need to have another burnout session.
[00:03:26] I’ve already learned everything I need to know, but. In truth, we all need, I think, a continual reminder that self care, that burnout prevention, and really every component of our businesses, we need these reminders to help us move on the right path because it’s really easy to slip into old habits or it’s really easy to fall back on an old way of thinking or not be as innovative and forward thinking.
[00:03:50] And when we think about summits, conferences, even if you are really experienced, in business to attend because sometimes it’s just a nice refresher on some of those business practices that maybe you already know, but you forget to put into practice and like that daily hustle part of being a business owner.
[00:04:07] Amber: Yeah, absolutely. I feel whenever I go to conferences, I’ve been attending conferences for the better part of my career pre PEP. Professional and now current pet professional. And I’ve done veterinary conferences, pet sitter conferences, and just generic business conferences at this point in time. And the number one thing besides the amazing speakers, besides the camaraderie and connection to other pet professionals or business professionals in general, is really getting inspired and me coming home with pages of notes, not necessarily even on the screen.
[00:04:42] Topics, but because it triggered something else in my brain or it triggered another idea, or I spoke to another business owner and they had this awesome idea that I was like, Oh my gosh, I want to implement that. And I also go home with the opposite of, I definitely don’t want to implement that, that is not my vibe for my business.
[00:05:00] And so it allows my business and other pet businesses specifically for pet Conferences to grow beyond just one brain thinking. Cause as pet business owners, most of us are individual pet
[00:05:13] business owners. We’re not partnerships. So because of that, all of the growth and development concepts of our business are from one brain ours.
[00:05:23] And so when you go to a conference and get inspired and meet, you 25, 50 or 150 plus persons, or I’ve even gone to conferences that have what 25, 000 people attending. It lets you see what other people are doing and not having to get super innovative on your own, but rather be able to recreate a wheel that makes best work for your business.
[00:05:48] Morgan: I think it’s an important thing to bring up about the Florida Pet Services Association is that it’s called pet services. So you’re really incorporating anybody who is a pet business, the ally of pet businesses. So groomers, we call pet services. The fun word of poop scoopers pet sitters, dog walkers, treat makers, pet store owners, like you guys aren’t just while your board is made up of a lot of pet sitters, you are not just limited to a pet sitter conference or a pet sitter summit.
[00:06:15] And so you’re really encouraging. Everybody to come together in Florida and from the outside of Florida to learn all of these things and learn from each other. And I think that’s something that is really important for people to remember is that business is business and your business financials or your business marketing, your your self care, whatever those components are within your business that we’re going to be learning about.
[00:06:37] Those foundations are applicable no matter what kind of business you have and the, the details of how you apply it to your specific business are going to be different, but it’s. The information is here for everybody. And I think that’s a really cool thing that you guys are doing.
[00:06:50] The Value of In-Person Connections
[00:06:50] Doug: Yeah, I think being able to come together, as a Petsitter and dog walker myself, being able to come together with. Veterinarians and groomers and poop scoopers and all these other sectors of the animal world. It’s so beautiful and it’s such a unique opportunity. When you look at other industries out there, how many of them actually come together and help each other in this way?
[00:07:13] And it’s, it just goes to show that we really are all in this for the betterment of the pets. We all want to help each other give these pets happier, healthier, better lives at the end of the day. And I can help as a pet sitter and dog walker in a certain way. And then I can come together with this poop scooper to give a cleaner environment, at their home.
[00:07:37] And then we can. Go to a groomer. And it’s just, it’s so beautiful. And that’s why we really wanted to have the FPS say, open to all these different businesses so that we can do this, we can come together under one roof and share stories, share our experiences and see what we can do to help bind together and create a better future
[00:08:00] for all of us.
[00:08:01] Amber: we’ve Florida Pet Services Association, one of our key statements, is really raising the bar for pets and their humans. And raising the bar is not just knowing and niching specifically for your industry alone. Because as we know, if you’re a groomer, a trainer, a pet store owner, et cetera, you’re constantly asked if I trust them They’re going to ask for referrals.
[00:08:25] They’re going to ask for who is your favorites? Who do you recommend for all these other pet care needs? And when we meet in the conference and have that camaraderie and connection, I may know some basics about grooming and training and pet care treats and other herbal supplements and medications and veterinary recommendations.
[00:08:47] But when I get to learn from those professionals, those business owners, I can make. Better policies for my business, better referral opportunities and referring the right businesses. That’s both safe for my business to refer to and for my, connected client, and there are some things that are considered standards and norms in.
[00:09:08] Those industries that we wouldn’t know about because it’s just common knowledge to them. It doesn’t get brought up necessarily that we wouldn’t know, unless we had those conversations and opened those connections, we had a great speaker last year, who’s also a speaker coming this year who spoke specifically on Florida and other.
[00:09:28] Coastal region states about how fecal waste directly impacts our environment, our soil health, and ultimately our water quality And when Dr.
[00:09:38] Ivory council spoke about those things our eyes were. Opened on why and how we can educate our clients on proper pet waste removal, Why we should recommend them to do poop scooping or pet waste removal services with a professional Or our company if we do that service and not just let the rain do the job for us Which I can educate my staff and clients on.
[00:10:02] But yet to the pet waste removal company that was there, that was common knowledge for them. And I was like, how did I not even think about that? Cause it’s not my always priority. And that’s what we find occurs at these conferences consistently is. The subjects don’t always get brought up about whether it’s in the grooming industry I forget the exact term, but some type of lung situation where breathing in hair consistently can cause major lung respiration issues.
[00:10:26] Something you don’t think about, but common knowledge in their, industry, same with cottage core laws and treat makers, these things come up. And the best way we can be bet the best pet professionals is learning about all aspects of the pet industry. And that’s what those conferences do.
[00:10:43] Okay.
[00:12:46] I think it’s something that you know, I agree with my first conference was with PetSitters International, who’s actually one of the sponsors also of the FPSA conference. And when I went, it was because another PetSitter that I knew that had been in the industry a few years prior to me. Wanted to go to, and she’s do you want to go with me?
[00:13:03] It’ll be a lot nicer to have somebody I know to go with me. And I was like, Oh, wow, absolutely. But also I was a newer pet business owner. So looking at these, I didn’t know the networking opportunities and the connection opportunities and the other conference opportunities until I was exposed to that world.
[00:13:20] I also was debating as a newer pet business owner, the value of going to a conference. We hear that a lot of, me having, especially if you’re a solo pet professional. That doesn’t have staff having to take off those days for travel and actual conference the conference cost the food cost the hotel cost You know Just maybe general wear and items that you may need to bring with you to have a successful conference And when they looked at those numbers They were concerning and they weren’t sure if they could afford it or if it was worth it if they were going to get their value in it and what I found is That the conference is one of those things that as a pet business professional You don’t have most Pet business professionals don’t have an individual employee staff person that’s growth and development or HR or marketing, until they’re larger. And when you’re going to these conferences, you’re actually training and educating yourself like a certification process, or, in those specifics. So you can be a Jack or Jill of all trades ultimately.
[00:14:18] And that brings value. That’s not literal. Like you can’t see the cashflow from it right away. But your long term outcome is going to make that value up extremely quickly. I’ve gone to multiple conferences where one change ultimately impacted our business that year in a positive manner significantly. And I think when you have those dinners out, that’s when those casual conversations come up talking about Oh no, this is how I handle holiday times, or this is how I handle hiring, or this is how I handle vacation time myself, or.
[00:14:52] Benefits for myself or my staff for mental health and body health and education and training that don’t come up, or you can’t always find a blog about online, and those are the things that will change your business to make it something that you won’t burn out. because of what is it the average pet sitter or pet business owner, I think is a three to five year burnout window.
[00:15:14] Morgan: you mentioned a really important piece for the solopreneur especially, but I think, all three of us here on this conversation, we all have teams. And I don’t think. Any of us wouldn’t disagree with this, but somebody is always going to need something from you at all times. And so being able to step away from your business for a weekend you have to make a plan for it.
[00:15:36] Making Time and Budgeting to Attend Conferences
[00:15:36] Morgan: And if you just say maybe I’ll go to a conference. If I have that weekend open is never going to happen because somebody will always need you. There will always be a client who needs something.
[00:15:45] There’ll always be a team member who needs something. And you really have to put a plan in place and just start blocking things off on your calendar to say Nope, this is something that I know my business is going to benefit from. And I’m just going to have to take this time for myself and for my team and for my business and just put it on the calendar and do it.
[00:16:02] Doug: Yeah, that’s easier said than done to put it on your calendar and do it. That’s much easier said than done.
[00:16:08] Morgan: It’s a practice.
[00:16:09] Doug: My first conference, was when we met morgan and I was so nervous to go to that conference I had never done anything like that before and i’m such a i’m just i’m a dog guy I don’t spend time with other people I hang out with dogs and like To go fly from Florida to Texas by myself, walk into this building where I didn’t know anyone and I didn’t have a dog with me, like my anxiety was through the roof, but I remember leaving that conference and thinking. This is incredible. This is going to change my business. This is going to change my life. I have to go to more of these. I want to put on one of these one day. And it just, it’s trickled out into all these other things where, now I go to every conference I can get onto my schedule. It’s led to these great relationships.
[00:16:59] And I want to say if you’re like me and you’re awkward and you’re a little shy and you just want to hang out with the dogs, these are your people at the conferences, we’re all this way, like you’re going to be okay. You can come find one of us. We’ll wrap you up in a hug. We’ll go get dinner.
[00:17:15] Amber: There’s every type of human possible at these conferences, for sure. You’ll find somebody to connect with.
[00:17:22] Morgan: Yeah, for sure. And Doug, I remember very specifically meeting you because same thing. I’d never gone to a conference. And I remember walking in and. You had friended me on Facebook before the conference and I walked into this room and I was like, I recognize that guy from Facebook. I’m like, I think I could go talk to him because he friended me on Facebook.
[00:17:41] He must be somebody I can go talk to. And I think almost all of my good pet sitter friends from across the country I’ve met at conferences . Like I got to go pick up a puppy in California this last fall and one of my pet sitter friends lived in the area.
[00:17:55] And so I messaged Kim. her Kim’s going to be also at the conference talking with you, Doug, about a hiring panel. And I was like, Hey Kim, I’m going to be in your neighborhood. Do you want to meet up? And she’s like, do you want to just stay at my house overnight? Sure. I’d love to. It’s just those things that you make, even though it’s just a couple of days out of a year, you make these really strong friendships. And there is something special about being in a particular industry and meeting people who actually understand, because so many people don’t understand what it’s like to have a lot of our pet service businesses are 24 seven, or, they’re at least much more, People focused, maybe, like a retail store is obviously people focused, but it’s different because you’re not going into their homes, whereas we are in people’s homes.
[00:18:38] We’re dealing with clients at a much more high touch level, and it’s just a completely different type of business that has certain pain points and has certain challenges and certain benefits. And not everybody who is another small business owner is going to understand that. But when you can get into A conference like this, there’s just so much camaraderie that happens.
[00:18:59] Doug: say one of my favorite parts is when you go to these conferences, you can talk to people that have been in business for way longer than you’ve been in business and people that are brand new. Getting to meld those different ideas and those different levels of experience together. It, it really is such a game changer.
[00:19:17] And you just mentioned Kim. I’ll never forget the first time I met Kim and she told me she had been in business, I think I think she’s 20
[00:19:26] Morgan: She’s more than that. She’s she’s over 30 years. So Kim has
[00:19:30] Doug: Oh, wow. Wow.
[00:19:31] Morgan: has had a pet sitting business almost as long as I have been alive.
[00:19:34] Doug: Yeah.
[00:19:35] Morgan: So you think about just the information that she has to share and like the trends that she has seen over the last 30 years are just incredible.
[00:19:44] Doug: I remember her telling me how long she had been in business and all I could think was. Oh my god, this is possible Because I was at a point in my business at that time where I didn’t know if I could do this that much longer You know I didn’t know if it was even possible to make it work that much longer And just hearing from her that she has done this with employees In california for this many years. It just made me take a step back and say Man it’s possible. And it’s just such a game changer.
[00:20:17] Amber: I agree. I’ve I’ve met pet professionals that have moved out of state and have another business in another state. And I was like, I didn’t even know that was a possibility and they’re running it beautifully. And I’ve met professionals at conferences that we stayed a group of us in the hotel hangout spot downstairs until wee hours of the morning, uh, to just having a grand old conversation about business, about life, about deep, personal connection pieces that made you go, okay, it’s not just me that’s having this struggle. Oh, or wow. I’ve been thinking about doing that thing.
[00:20:53] And they’ve been doing it for 10 years, even though it sounds terrifying, whether it’s having staff or from ICs to employees, or having a multi state or multi county business, or staying a solopreneur for, 25 years, or for me, seeing other persons have children and a full time business and how they’ve made it work in their life.
[00:21:17] And you just see so many aspects of people and businesses and different ways of doing it. And I think the greatest thing that I remember saying is, I don’t know if I can afford this.
[00:21:26] And then I remember another business owner saying, it’s a business expense. And it, It helps me also realize that I can incorporate my business into my daily life as well. I have a spouse. I have children that are of elementary and middle school ages And a lot of conferences I kind of split that we also make it a family vacation as well so the business pays for my ticket and my conference and then we use that hotel room for the family and then we add an extra few days and do the Those zoos locally or the national parks NAPS is holding a conference in Arizona next year And it’s only a few hours away from the Grand Canyon, So, of course, we’re gonna take that opportunity to do those iconic things that I wouldn’t necessarily go to As a Floridian.
[00:22:12] And forcing you to have that weekend away, like you said, because, if you don’t mark it off, you’re never going to do it.
[00:22:18] You’re right. 100%.
[00:22:20] Morgan: the Texas Pet Sitters Conference this year is on a cruise ship. So if you haven’t signed up for that one, guys, you need some time to get away the end of February. There is still room for that one as well.
[00:22:29] Doug: One of the things I’m like most excited about our conference this year is in August, we’re going to be at the Rookery Bay Research Center there in Naples. And I’ve lived in Florida for Almost 15 years now, and I’ve never been to Naples and I’ve heard for years about how beautiful it is and how beautiful the beaches are and how blue the water is.
[00:22:51] And, and to see the pictures of this research center that we’re going to be at, this Estuarian Center, it’s like 100, 000 acres of these preserved lands that we can go and explore, before and after our conference sessions. It’s I am so excited about this. It’s not just about the business side like Amber was saying. It’s we’re getting to combine a vacation vibes into this too. And I’m really excited.
[00:23:19] Amber: I’ve been at conferences at the typical, hotel conference facility.
[00:25:01] Morgan: you mentioned earlier, Amber, I that as business owners, we wear a lot of hats. And I have a phrase I like to say is that we are often the CEO of our business, which is the chief everything officer. And especially if you have a smaller business or you’re a solopreneur, a lot of times we find that forget that we either need to learn all of these things, or we need to try to find people who we trust that we can start to hand some of these things off with.
[00:25:26] So maybe if you don’t love doing social media, come and listen to Scarlett talk about social media. So now you are educated on how to interview somebody to take over your social media accounts. Because if you don’t know anything about social media, how can you hire the right person to even be a consultant for you to help take some of that off of your plate?
[00:25:45] Okay. Bye. So even if you say, you know what? I am not social media. I’d have no intention on being a social media expert. You don’t have to do it, but you need to know and educate yourself on what type of social media expert you would want to even work with. So these conferences are great because you have such a wide variety of information that you’re presenting, that will apply to people, no matter if they Want to hire everything out.
[00:26:07] They want to do everything themselves. there’s, information that you’re going to need no matter what, because our businesses have so much going on in them and there is just. So much wealth of information that is great to tap into, because like you said, people who are coming to speak usually want to chat with you too. So whether somebody has a booth, whether you can nab them after their session, and ask a question in the hallway, there are so many opportunities to tap into.
[00:26:32]
[00:27:19] Unexpected Benefits of Conferences
[00:27:19] Morgan: There are so many things where I was like, why am I doing this? And I think much like when we were talking about having to make time in our schedule to make a conference happen. we also have to just block some money aside in our business to be able to afford these things, because I know for many years I looked at going to the pet sitter international conference. And I was always like, Oh, I’ve already got clients booked that weekend or, Oh, I’ve that’s, I gotta buy a plane ticket and I’ve got to buy a hotel room and those costs were really daunting, but now that I’ve gone I find room in the budget to go to multiple conferences every year.
[00:28:07] And so I think once you realize how beneficial they are, you make room for those funds, you make room for that time because you understand it really is an investment. And sometimes that’s a, a word that just gets tossed about, Oh, you got to make an investment in yourself. You got to make an investment in your business.
[00:28:25] Which can be like yeah, buddy, when you don’t have a lot of money in your business to even say, I’m barely paying my rent, let alone having room to go to a conference. But there actually is a lot of value that comes from investing in your business and in yourself.
[00:28:39] Doug: I think that’s such a, awesome point that, for so many years, I didn’t take risks with my business or didn’t try certain things because I just thought to myself, you I’m a pet sitter and a dog walker. I can’t do that. My business couldn’t do that. How could I ever afford to do something like that?
[00:28:57] And then I go to conferences and I meet people and I see what they’re doing and the things that they’ve offloaded off of their plate and have Other people helping them and all these different things. And I’m like, if they can do it, I can do it too. And it’s it just turns so inspiring. Amber, you bought your van, last year and now you have the treadmill service and in your area, I think that’s so incredible and it’s inspiring.
[00:29:24] And, as a pet sitter and dog walker, that’s something that, just a couple of years ago, I would have, Heard and said I can’t do something like that. But now I see you doing it I see you rocking it and it’s something that We all need to look at each other and go to these conferences and do things like this and say What else is possible?
[00:29:42] What else can we do?
[00:29:44] Morgan: I know we mentioned earlier the benefit of doing these group dinners or that networking time. And there have been so many times where I’ve had even just a 5 minute conversation that has changed an aspect of my business and finally I was like, you know what? I am tired of this problem , I am the owner of my business. It is within my ability to change this rule, to make it fit for me better.
[00:30:05] And I finally had to have that one conversation that. Pushed me forward to making that change. And now it’s Oh, why didn’t I do this years ago? It’s hard sometimes to make some of those changes with.
[00:30:16] Out having that in person conversation. Or I know like when I was going to switch to time to pet and I was doing everything with a pen and, and my phone calendar and like writing on a paper calendar. And I was talking with one of my pet sitter friends. And she’s maybe you should look at like time to pet. It’s just I know it costs money, but I think it’s actually going to be better for you. And then I tested it and I was like, yeah, this is, this is definitely worth the money, but you have to have those conversations sometimes because it is scary.
[00:30:41] I know Doug, you and I have had the conversation before of making changes in our business is scary because we don’t know what our clients are going to say, but those things are a little bit easier when you get to talk to people and actually say, Hey, I know you made this change and how did it work for you? And obviously all of our businesses are different, but having those conversations can make it easier.
[00:31:00] Doug: Yeah, and through having those conversations a lot of the time what I’ve found is that Most decisions are pretty fluid, and if you make a decision, based off of a conversation that you had at a conference or something, and it doesn’t go the same way for your business as it did for their business. It’s going to be okay and you can reverse that decision. You can tweak it, you can change it and keep moving forward. And, it’s so important to have that abundance mindset and just focus on the positive there. You were talking about like those five minute conversations that can change your business drastically.
[00:31:38] And I’ll never forget Morgan. Sitting at dinner after the PSI conference in Cleveland last year. And, my manager Brenna was with us and me and Brenna were going back and forth about a meet and greet a new client meet and greet, and you said, wait, you guys don’t charge for your meet and greets. And I was like, you charge for your
[00:31:58] Morgan: And you’re like, why would you ever do such a thing?
[00:32:01] Doug: I couldn’t believe it. I, it had never even crossed my mind and I made the decision right then and there to do it. And I was terrified. I thought for sure our clients are going to be mad about this, but you talked me into it. And I would never go back now. I’m like, why weren’t, why wasn’t I doing this from day one?
[00:32:20]
[00:32:23] Morgan: yes. Absolutely. And I think one more plug for the benefit of an in person conference, obviously everything you just said, but also able to have those deeper level conversations. There are so many, Facebook groups right now that are available for every, niche, every market type, every industry type has a Facebook group where you can go in and you can ask questions.
[00:34:38] And there are some really amazing groups out there that have so much quality content, but. A conversation that you can have on social media just cannot compare to the type of conversation you can have. When you go out to dinner with somebody and you’re talking across the table or your group thinking with, four or five or six or 10 of you at a table together, they’re just not the same, social media is an amazing tool, but it’s not the same as an in person conversation that you’re going to get at a summit, whether it’s at the Florida pet services summit, or it’s at the Texas conference, the NAPS conference, the PSI conference. There are so many opportunities to really plan, to get your butt in a seat and have some of those deep level conversations with people are really going to make a difference.
[00:35:20] Doug: totally, and if you’re not in Florida, you can still come to our
[00:35:24] conference. We would love to have you. Morgan’s flying there from South Dakota. We got Kim flying out from California. We have a few people from all around the country flying in. So we would love to see you.
